MY Story

Hi, Selam.  My name is Eden Tarik Wild, I am 13 yrs old. I would like to share with you why I started Buna Tarik Roasters: Coffee with a story. I was born in an Ethiopian village in the Soddo district. My mom passed away during child birth, my brothers and sisters were unable to take care of me. So my aunt traveled all the way from Addis to my village to rescue me. The area of my birth does not have clean water supply and many people get ill from “water born disease.”  My aunt took my siblings but being a new born she was unable to take care of me and decided to give me to an orphanage.  At the orphanage I was loved and cared for by the workers; they said I was very independent and sneaky. I would often leave my room and sneak into the office and tell the workers “you know want to hug me today.”  My best friend was Brotakan, we would play and from what I have been told we would always talk and laugh when we were supposed to listen. I am still a little like that today.  One day I received a gift at the orphanage it was a stuffed animal and a photo book with pictures of a strange family from California. Getting a gift was a big deal so I kept the stuffed animal and the photo book close to me. The workers told me the people in the picture were my family and that they were coming to get me. My aunt loved Jesus, and had been praying for a Christian family to come and adopt me. I don’t think I really understood until one day my parents from America arrived at the orphanage.

We came to California where I have grown up with all the blessings of being in a loving family and having plenty, especially clean water. It breaks my heart to know that Brutakan or any child may not have clean water.  Due to adoption laws we are unable to send money directly to family members but I wanted to do something meaningful for my birth place.

Growing up every night my dad would pray with me, pray for my Ethiopian family and Brutakan. I don’t know if she has been adopted or still at the orphanage. At night I always asked my dad tell me the story: the story of my adoption. There was the fast version, short version and the funny version. Every time he would finish with this statement: “And then I saw the most beautiful girl in the world in her pink dress and pink shoes…”  I still have the pink dress and shoes, every time I see them it still makes me feel safe, loved and wanted.
